September 9
“For thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘The bowl of flour shall not be
exhausted, nor shall the jar of oil be empty, until the day that the Lord sends
rain on the face of the earth.’” So she went and did according to the word of
Elijah, and she and he and her household ate for many days. 1 Kings 17:14,15.
This is a story of remarkable faith. The widow, suffering without food in a
drought, is approached by Elijah, who asks her to make him a little bread from
her last-remaining flour. It was the very morsel she planned to eat and then she
had planned to die. Without hesitation she did as Elijah asked, and she, Elijah,
and her son ate for many days. Elijah had called upon the Lord, and the Lord had
delivered as promised.
I am touched by this faith. We would do well to exhibit faith in the same
manner, as we contemplate and act upon the promises of God. I like the thought
that Elijah stayed with her for many days. They shared the bounty of God—this is
true fellowship. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, is not one who would hurry on after
fulfilling a need. Instead He would linger, eat with us, and give us time to
appreciate His presence. This is love.
Lord, we are humbled by this example of faith. Certainly we walk with Jesus—the
one who would seek every opportunity to fulfill our faith. I need to learn from
You and to trust You fully. No matter how difficult each task appears, I need to
seek Your will and allow You to perform miracles that stretch far beyond my
comprehension or ability. You are so good at these things. Allow my faith to
ever be placed only in You. Amen.
