September 7

“Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, Father, save Me from this hour?  But for this purpose I came to this hour.  Father, glorify Thy name.”  There came therefore a voice out of heaven. “I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”  John 12:27,28.

Jesus is teaching the multitudes, and He has a moment when He contemplates His coming death on the cross. Note that He does not pray that the Father would save Him from this hour. He has just finished explaining that a grain of wheat must die in order to bear fruit.  So it is to be with His own life.  It is the same with those who would follow Jesus.  We are to die to self-will and follow His will.

Jesus knows the key to prayer.  In this case it is that the Father must be glorified.  Jesus receives an immediate response to His prayer—the Father replies that He has been glorified and will be glorified again.  Yes, Jesus understands that all we do is meant to glorify the Father.

Friends, we have a substitute, Jesus the righteous, who has died for us.  Sometimes we also face situations that may stress us, but we are to face them without sin.  The key to our life in the Spirit is to seek what will glorify the Father.  If we could just keep that goal before us we would resist all temptation to follow our own fleshly way.  As the Scriptures clearly show us, we are to keep our mind on heavenly things.  Only in this manner can we walk consistently with Jesus.  We become vessels designed with a special purpose—the glorification of the Father.

Father, we seek to glorify You in all we do and say.  Each step of our walk with You, today and each following day, is filled with opportunities to do exactly that—if only I would listen more clearly to You.  Thank You for walking and talking with us.  Amen. .
