September 4

So also it is written, “The first Man, Adam, became a living soul.”  The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven. 1 Corinthians 15:45,47.

Here we find that the Lord Jesus is called by two names—“the last Adam” and “the second man.”  Notice that He is not the second Adam, nor is He the last man.  The distinctions here are very important.

As the last Adam Christ is the final outcome of humanity.  He represents what God set out to do in the first Adam, but this time without sin.  There will be no additional attempts made by God.  As the second man He is the head and body of a new creation of man.  The first man was slain at the cross.  The new creation brings in everything that God intended.

All of this was accomplished by the grace of God.  When we accept Jesus by faith we receive all that God has to offer, and the path is set before us to partake of the divine nature of Christ.  We do not bring anything from our old life in Adam to the new life—try as we may.  We must finally realize that all is complete in Christ.

Today, Father, let me realize more fully what You have accomplished.  I have no strength, no power, beyond what You give me.  All praise and glory go to You.  I know that You are fully aware of each step that I take today, and I can rest in the assurance that Your desires can and will be accomplished.  Amen.
