So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan;
and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. Abram settled
in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved
his tents as far as Sodom. Genesis 13:11,12.
Abram had given Lot first choice on selection of the land.
Lot chose the fertile valley of the Jordan, and then he journeyed eastward into
the cities—including the vile city of Sodom. It is Abram who is to be blessed
for his compassionate, giving heart. He will be given all the land forever.
We are to be careful about the environment we select. The
attraction of the cities, with their abundance of ‘things to do’ and their
wealth of associations with people—both good and evil—is a force with which most
of us must contend. There are choices presented to us that may seem innocent,
but there can be danger lurking around the corner as we begin to compromise our
beliefs.
I recently spent some time in a log cabin that was next to
a small lake. There was the solitude and beauty of the farm- lands and woods
around me, and the gentle wind reminded me of the still, small voice of God
speaking to me. Here I could be alone with God in a few moments of shear
bliss. There were no annoying sounds, no man-made structures distracting me
from God’s creation. I could just sit, see, imagine, and listen. Oh, that we
could all capture similar moments. It would be good for our soul.
Father, I ask today that I be given a heart that seeks the
best interest of those around me. Let me give them first choice. I know that
You will bless me in whatever You choose to give me—or take away from me. I can
trust You fully. I love You and Your Son, Jesus. Amen.
