September 26

The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; the one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.  Proverbs 13:3

We are prone to talk too much.  I am amazed at the life of teenagers, who spend endless hours talking on their cell-phones.  But we adults are often inclined to behave the same way.  It seems that if we have a ‘juicy’ nugget of information in our mind we cannot wait to share it--whether it be relevant or not.  We imagine that we are important to our peers if we have the latest slant on things.  But in all of this chatter there is danger.

The spreading of deceit, or gossip, or misleading information is so destructive to our lives.  I see this in our churches and in our daily contacts with people of all faiths.  Our Lord has said that ruin awaits those with loose lips. The words we choose to say flow from our heart attitude.  When we are dedicated to the Lord in all that we do and say then there will be no empty chatter from our lips.

If we concentrate upon the so-called wisdom that stems from our mouth then we are not focusing upon the Lord.  I pray that we can learn to wait upon the Lord before we speak.  Toward that end I ask You, Father in Heaven, to bring glory to Your name as we walk together today.  Let my words speak Your wisdom; let me be silent when I have nothing truthful to say.  I thank You for the Spirit’s control over my mouth.  In the name of Jesus, Amen.
