Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your
heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Psalm 62:8
We do not know the occasion for this Psalm of David. But
it is clear that we really do not need to know—for faith is tested in a variety
of situations. It is always being challenged. Sometimes we can see clearly,
but faith is still required. Sometimes we cannot see clearly, but faith will
suffice to guard our hearts. Faith always requires an object, and for those of
us who call ourselves Christian, that object is the Lord Jesus Christ.
Our hearts are a reservoir of emotions, all crying for
attention. The requirements of a typical day cause us to express emotions that
deal with people, with difficulties, and with the beauty of the creation around
us. We also are tempted to trust in ‘rocks’ that are merely a hollow shell of
the true rock that is Jesus. We sometimes trust in riches, in material things,
in our own strengths, and in our ability to manipulate others. Yet, there is
this wonderful Rock that can supply all of our needs—even needs we cannot
imagine.
David had many instances when he would find the shelter of
an earthly rock—especially as enemies were pursuing him. He must have realized
that the rocks in which he would hide had many shortcomings. No freedom of
movement, limited food and water, and walls that closed him in. When contrasted
with the true Rock a stone refuge could never measure up. Jesus sets us free to
become like Him, to enjoy the fruit of the Spirit, and to offer praise to Him.
Our Rock moves with us wherever we go.
Thank You, Father, for providing a refuge for us in
Christ. I desperately need to free myself from the entanglements of this
world. Jesus has become my true Rock, and I can do no better than to take
shelter within Him. Thank You and Amen.
