Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He
will exalt you. James 4:10.
There is no better attribute than humility among those who
would call themselves Christian. It is the key to desiring more of God and less
of self. It is the breaking down of self-will and the acceptance of His will.
God has promised to exalt the one who is humble, all the while detesting proud
and arrogant behavior.
We are not to boast of our successes when in reality we
know that all success is the Lord’s. It is very easy to draw attention to
ourselves—even to pretend humility—all the while hoping that someone notices our
spirituality or other attributes. I often marvel at the patience and grace of
God as He deals with us.
We are not to claim any credit for our exaltation. What
God is really doing is revealing more of Himself to us—He and His Son are our
exaltation. He opens all that He has for us—all that is already given to
us—from His very nature. We are even seated with Him in the heavens!
Father, let me present You to the world in a humble way. I
desire no attention to my virtue, only to Your virtue. Give me the words to
describe how You love us and walk with us. That will mean that I can relate to
my fellowman in a new and powerful way. Rid me of any clichés or pat sayings.
Instead let me identify with all whom I meet in a very honest, sincere way.
Amen.
