September 15

So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” And he said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.” Genesis 32:27,28.

We recall that Jacob had lied to his father, Isaac, as he pretended to be Esau in order to receive the blessing. After years of manipulations and deceit, Jacob has wrestled with a “man” throughout the night. The man asks Jacob his name, and this time Jacob gives the correct answer. This is a remarkable confrontation with Jacob—God has been watching and listening to all that has transpired. God would have us be truthful about our name. Furthermore, He has a new name in store for us when we meet Him.

What is my name, Lord? Have I stood for integrity and truth—Your truth? Can I be counted on to stand for You and You alone? How does my fellow man look upon me?
I can only trust that You are forever watching and guiding me so I can be the ‘Christ’ that others may see and touch. Oh, that we could fully understand the value and meaning behind our name! God places great emphasis upon a name.

Today, Lord, as I “wrestle” with You over how I lead my life, let me be changed forever. Let me stand for Your name in ways that I do not even fully comprehend. For it is not my strength or resolve that will win the day—it is Your great name that must prevail. Thank You that You are so intimately involved with me that You are willing to wrestle and subdue me. I can only be a better person for the encounter. Above all, You will be the One that is honored. In the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
