And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits
of God, and the seven stars, says this: ‘I know your deeds, that you have a name
that you are alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen the things that
remain, which were about to die; for I have not found your deeds completed in
the sight of My God. Remember therefore what you have received and heard; and
keep it, and repent.’ Revelation 3:1-3a)
Are we often like the church in Sardis? We think our deeds are enough, but in
the eyes of the Lord they are incomplete. We think we have established a name
that is a living testimony, yet it is a name that shows deadness. Jesus gives
clear, concise instruction for this church in Sardis, and I would do well to
listen and apply the same instruction to my own life.
He, Jesus, gives five things for us to do: wake up, strengthen the things that
remain, remember what you have received and heard, keep it, and repent. Yes,
Lord, that summarizes all that we need—You have revealed so much to us and shown
us what we are to do. I need to be snapped back to reality and I need to renew
my faith and willingness to do all that You desire.
Today, Lord Jesus, I ask that I may WAKE UP to the reality of Your presence in
my life. I ask that I will set upon the task of strengthening my trust in You as
we walk together. You are all that remains—I have nothing of value other than
You. I ask that I may recall all that I have received and heard from Your word
and the Holy Spirit. Refresh me today. Let me keep it in my heart. And yes, I
repent of my sins and my unfaithfulness. I choose to turn back to the path that
walks closely with You. Thank You, Jesus. Amen.
