September 1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.  Proverbs 15:1.

If we could only remember this verse, we would posses much gain.  How often have I answered anger with more anger, as if that would put someone in his place.  Yet, it turns out that a quiet response throws the listener off guard.  A gentle answer says that you are not threatened; that you are still in control.  And a gentle answer creates more gentleness.  It is contagious!

Jesus is the author of the gentle answer.  When placed in an ugly, illegal trial, He only spoke softly and revealed truth in a controlled, quiet manner.  He never expressed anger, only forgiveness toward His accusers.  If He had done otherwise we would have no basis for honoring Him.

The fruit of the Spirit is self-control.  So we find that the Holy Spirit, living within us, can express Himself in a gentle manner.  He can deal with any situation and cause us to present the life of Christ—a life that will call out to others who would be otherwise out of control.

Thank You Father for the gift of a gentle spirit.  We owe everything to You, and to You is given all praise.  We count on Your control during each precious moment.  Amen.
