It is encouraging that more Christians are discovering the truths
within the Bible that reveal concepts compatible with modern
science. We do not look to science as the final authority, but many
scientists would be wise to reflect on some Bible passages that
might provide clues to their research. The Bible is not a science
textbook, yet it provides truth that God knew long before the mind
of man was able to grasp and apply it. Man would do well to read the
Word more closely. Some examples are given below in various areas of
science.*
The Laws of Gravitation and Nuclear Forces.
In Colossians 1:16-17 we read, “For by Him all things were created,
both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether
thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been
created by Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him
all things hold together.” We have a creator, God, who has
established the physical, chemical, and nuclear laws that hold all
objects in space and time. Whether these objects are large and
visible, or infinitesimally small, His nature holds them in place
and intact. We are dealing with a personal creation that reflects
the very nature of God. This passage in Colossians is showing that
all creation is embodied within Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Genesis 1:1 declares, “In the beginning God created the heavens and
the earth.” This universe is to be regarded as a total expression of
Christ. We should remember this as we satisfy our desires to explore
outer space and the inner space of the atom.
Astronomy
For years man held false concepts of the earth and the stars. His
mind imagined the earth on pillars, or balanced on the back of
Atlas. Copernicus and Galileo shattered these illusions in the 16th
and 17th centuries, but only with undeserved persecution. All we had
to do was reflect on the passage in Job 26:7, which says, “He
stretches out the north over empty space, and hangs the earth on
nothing.” Flat-earth theory could have been demolished long before,
if we had only read Isaiah 40:22, which says, “It is He who sits
above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like
grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain and
spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.” Yes, the circle of the
earth should have been known long ago. Perhaps it was known in the
ancient times of Egypt, yet it was forgotten for thousands of years.
Hydrology.
This science deals with the waters of the earth. It studies how they
are distributed and the cycle of evaporation, precipitation, and
flow into rivers and the sea—only to be repeated.
It was not realized until the 17th century that this cycle occurred.
Until then it was believed that waters came from subterranean
caverns within the earth. Man could have read Ecclesiastes 1:7—“All
the rivers flow into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place
where the rivers flow, there they flow again.” Here we have the
cycle clearly explained. Why does not man search the scriptures?
Biology.
How many persons have been deliberately bled to death—all within the
practice of early medicine? No one realized the importance of our
lifeblood. Yet all we needed to do was read Leviticus 17:11a. “For
the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on
the altar to make atonement for your souls.”
Health
It has been revealed by recent research that our health is
influenced by our emotions. Stress, anger, or worry has huge impacts
on our overall health. If we had read Proverbs 17:22, and taken it
literally, we might have been spared some unnecessary anguish. “A
joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the
bones.”
There are other areas of our life that the Bible calls us to
understand. We might look into the area of human relations—how to
love God and our neighbor as ourselves. The Word provides clear
messages on this, if we would only listen. We are to repent and turn
to Christ for a newly created life that can love in the manner that
God intended. We are to realize that we battle not against the
flesh, but against spiritual forces in heavenly places. We are to
discern all three aspects of man—body, soul, and spirit. There is so
much to be learned and applied. When shall we do it? The time is
now!
*. I am indebted to the publication by T. C. Higle, “Journey through
Spiritual Bootcamp”, which revealed these relevant passages. I take
this in a very personal manner, for it is obviously true that I had
previously discovered only some of these science-related truths. So
I am also guilty of not reading the scriptures.
