October 31

And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”  And Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but at Your bidding I will let down the nets.”  And when they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break.  Luke 5:4-6.

This is a clear example of the futility of working without the Lord, or working with the Lord’s guidance.  Simon Peter prided himself in his ability to fish, although it seems that the Gospel reveals that he was always fishing on the wrong side of the boat.  So it is with us when we leave out Jesus.  It does not matter what our experience is, or how many times we try, but it does depend upon including the Lord in all that we do.  That means we are to trust in His guidance, not in our own skills.

Currently, times are such that God is using the perils of the financial crisis to draw us back to Him.  In whom will we trust?  We have been let down by leaders who were more interested in their own greed than they were in the security of the people.  But of course our final security is in the hands of the Lord.  He is showing this to us in a renewed way.

So let us not fish on the wrong side.  Let us today proclaim that Jesus is Lord of our lives, our finances, our relationships and our service.  We share in His life in a miraculous way, and that fact should be held before us in all that we do and say.

Thank You Father for the intimate way You participate in all that do.  We owe every thing to You, and we cannot face each day without Your guidance.  We ask You to impress this fact upon us in a fresh, new way.  There is so much for us to learn, and You are so patient to be present continually as we walk together.  Thank You and Amen.
