October 30
Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of
life. Proverbs 4:23.
We are to watch over, or guard, our hearts because they are so vulnerable. God
is seeking a person after His own heart, so He regards our heart as something so
precious. In the parable of the sower in Matthew 13 the heart is said to be the
soil where the word is sown. (See Matthew 13:19). We are to be fertile soil that
responds fully to God’s word.
There are times when I allow my heart to be choked by problems, hurts, and
circumstances that only crowd out the voice of God. I allow these things to grow
when I should repent and allow the Lord to uproot these foreign plants. He will
do this if I would only trust in Him. He is forever seeking me, and He wants
only to nourish me with His word.
Today, Lord, let me be fertile soil--let me present a heart that You will
cultivate and nourish. I expect to be ‘plowed’. Your ways are always the best,
for You seek the proper outcome—one that makes me more like You. I thank You for
being the great soil tender. Amen.
