October 24
But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day
and night. And he will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which
yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he
does, he prospers. Psalm 1:2,3.
The word “Psalm” means “song.” We can envision the writer singing to the Lord as
he meditates upon the nature and the law of God. The image of a tree by streams
of water assures us that God will supply our needs. Those needs will be met in
the proper season or time—that is, in God’s time. We need not be concerned that
the supply will fail. The fruit of our work for the Lord will show forth in
abundance as He directs.
Whatever we do in the name of the Lord will proper. It would be easy, as many
have done, to claim that the prosperity involved here is one of earthly wealth
or fame. But that would be missing the point of the Psalm. Instead God is
interested in producing His joy within the inner man—He is bent upon showing us
that in all circumstances we will prosper within our spirit as we contemplate
the workings of His Spirit in our heart. We will walk in constant assurance that
He is there with us. We will discover new ways to give honor and glory to Him as
we face every situation. Above all, we will thrive on the nourishment that comes
from His nature living within us.
Today Lord God let me draw life from your stream of living water. I will not be
able to contain it or hoard it, for I will be made willing and eager to share it
with others. Let all around me see the prosperity of the Lord. Let them see
that they too can be planted beside streams of Your water. Give me a new song of
praise to You. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
