October 18

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”, and there was light. Genesis 1:1-3.

I am convinced that Christians need to believe these words, for not to believe would cast doubt on all or any part of the Scriptures. Here there is no hint of the “Big Bang.” There is no gradual evolution of the universe over vast distances and time. The Lord has spoken everything into existence, and we need to look upon His creation with awe and wonder. I want a God like that—I am not willing to regard myself as a chance product of trial and error.

The light that God spoke upon the earth must have been from Him. Jesus is the light of the world. The sun and moon were not created until the fourth day. Yet all the vegetation, produced on the third day, was basking in the light of the Lord. Why do we seek alternatives to our creation—we need to look no further than the loving God that created us in His own image? Those who would try to envision other starting points for our existence are the ones who are unwilling to regard us as being accountable to Him.

Today Lord Jesus let me take the time to behold Your creation. The sun and moon, the stars, the balance of all life in the nature around me, all cry out in honor of Your name. How can I not do the same? We are seeing a taste of the new heaven and the new earth that will eventually come. As good as it now is, there is a far better life in store for those who would place their trust in You. Let me live that way today. Amen.
