October 15
Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that
David sent Joab and servants with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the
sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 11:1.
It is this mindset; this shirking of duty that led to David’s great sin. He is
idle when he should have been about the Lord’s work. He then is attracted to
Bathsheba, and you know the rest of the story. This tragic story illustrates the
danger of idle time. It shows that we are so prone to follow the attractions of
the world. It shows us the ultimate fact that we can be tempted into sin against
God. All because we do not make proper use of our time.
Lord, I have often made poor use of my time. It is so easy to work on endeavors
that lead nowhere. I need to place You and Your interests first, and then I can
walk upright in this world. Left to myself I can be a wretch.
Today I ask You Lord Jesus to guide me and cause me to listen carefully. When I
am to relax, then I will relax. But when I am to go forward with You then I
shall go forward. I will not worry about what I am to say, for You will give me
the words. I will not seek the pleasures of this world, for I know that often
You had no place even to lay Your head. I have been so blessed, but do not allow
me to think that I have deserved anything. Teach me over and over to make my
time Your time. Amen.
