November 28

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.  Joshua 1:8

Joshua had only the first five books of the Bible, and God is telling him that the secret of success is found in its pages.  We are not to consider that this advocates “prosperity theology”, wherein some would proclaim that God wants to make us financially prosperous.  Instead the words of the law, or in our case all of the words of God in all of the Scripture, are intended to fulfill all of God’s desires for us.  In that sense we become successful or prosperous—acquiring all that God has to offer.

Meditation and prayer are the passageways to this treasure of God.  We cannot contemplate the Word without also placing our spirit under the control of the Holy Spirit.  As we do this we also begin to see the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in a new light.  We take on God’s characteristics more fully.  We find ourselves eager to include God in all that we do and say.  Yes, that is the fulfillment of prosperity.

We have all of the books of the Bible, so how much more wonderful our adventure into God’s Word can be.  We will lack nothing if we could just give the time and energy to meditation.  It is realized that we have earthly duties to perform; yet it is also possible to include thoughts about God’s Word as we walk with Him through the day.

Thank You, Father, for revealing Yourself to us in Your Word.  We have a perfect revelation of a perfect God in these pages.  Let me absorb more of You this day as I meditate upon You.  Amen.
