November 27

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers!  But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.  Psalm 1:1,2.

God blesses those who seek His word and His counsel.  When this Psalm was written the only text available to the reader was the Law.  It is remarkable, yet wonderful, that anyone could delight in just reading the Law, but that is exactly what is being described here.  The reason is that the Law reveals the very nature of God.  It shows us His desire for us and the deep love that He has for us.  Of course we know that keeping the Law cannot save us, but it is perfectly holy and descriptive of the goals God has for us.

Just as important is that we are asked to meditate upon the Law.  It becomes a part of us.  It describes to us what we are to think and do with our neighbors.  It describes the priorities of life and the choices we are to make.  Of course, we who have the whole revelation of the Scriptures, can know that the believer in Christ has the gift of the Holy Spirit, who will reveal God’s desires to us.  But God’s purpose, as revealed in the Law, is our foundation for all that God has in store for us.

As we contemplate the Law, we are invariably drawn away from scoffers and those who rebel against God.  The Law presents the highest standard for our life.  We readily see the flaw and the outcome of following the desires of men.  God’s goals become clear to us, and there is a motivation to please Him in all respects.

Father, we thank You that all the Law has been fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who died for us at the cross.  If He is willing to die for us, then we must realize that the Law is revealing Your highest goals for us.  The Law expresses Your nature, and that very nature is brought to us in Jesus.  Thank You for the revelation of Yourself—we are indebted to You forever.  Amen.
