November 23

Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since Thou hast spoken to Thy servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” And the Lord said to him “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him dumb or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” Exodus 4:10,11.

Sometimes these verses bring laughter on our part, for we think that Moses is reaching out in one last, desperate attempt to get out of facing Pharaoh. And he may very well be doing that. But there is more involved in this story. The fact is that none of us are eloquent when it comes to speaking for God—neither recently nor in times past. We can not conceive of what is proper to say without the Holy Spirit. In the case of Moses, God provided his brother, Aaron.

Considerable damage has been done in the name of Christianity by those who claim to be speaking for God, when in reality they are merely giving some words of man. We need to continually guard against this. Our God has made our mouths, our ears, and our eyes. We need to praise Him for this and place our faculties in His hand for His use.

Moses learned these things as he faced Pharaoh—as he spoke forth the various plagues. Yes, Moses became an instrument of the Lord. We are to become the same type of servant.

Father, I trust that today You will give me the words to speak as I encounter my fellow man. I will observe with my eyes and hear with my ears, but I trust that Your Holy Spirit will give me clear interpretations concerning what my senses have perceived. I will not rush ahead with meaningless words. You will guide me each step of the way. I look forward to many evidences of Your presence. Thank You in the name of Jesus. Amen.
