November 20
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged
sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints
and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews
4:12.
The natural man, that man arising from his relation to Adam, can not discern the
difference between soul and spirit. From this verse in Hebrews it would seem
that we have much to learn. All too often I have relied upon my soul, its
emotion, and its mind and will, to discern how I might conduct my life. But God
would have it another way—the way of the Spirit. I must rely upon the word of
God to teach me these differences.
We know that Jesus is the Word. He alone can guide me, through the Holy Spirit,
into matters of my spirit. He uses my conscience, my intuition, and the
communion of worship to reveal and guide me into His paths of righteousness.
What He tells me may seem contrary to “common sense.” My emotions may be
alarmed. But through it all I can rest that there is a deeper purpose-- a more
proper way to express His life within me.
I usually find these moments of truth when I am calm in spirit. The agitations
of the world are put aside, and I have time to just meditate on the Word of God.
“What are You telling me?” I may say. Perhaps there is someone nearby who will
guide me or reveal a thought. Perhaps an answer to a dilemma is found. Whatever,
the Lord has spoken in a still, small voice.
Lord, I long for these moments of leading by Your Spirit. My heart needs to turn
its thoughts and intentions over to You. Your Word will judge my heart. It
desperately needs to be cleansed and yielded to You alone. I thank You for Your
precious, living Word. Amen.
