November 2

I have set the Lord continually before me; because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; my flesh also will dwell securely. Psalm 16:8,9.

The keys to life, as it is meant to be lived, are within this Psalm by David. Peter also understood these matters in his sermon that is recorded in Acts chapter 2. I can not think of anything lacking in this provision from the Lord. By faith we are to set the Lord before us—in all that we do and say. As a result we become like a fortress—like a rock that can not be shaken. There is peace within our heart, for it shows only gladness. We can rejoice in His presence in all that we do. Even my flesh, my earthly body, feels secure.

By contrast, as I may trust in myself, I can demonstrate all the attributes that reflect only a fleshly attitude. I know too well how to trust in self, and I know too well the consequences of my action. Gladness is gone and there is no rejoicing. My health also may suffer. We are so prone to sin. Only by turning to the Lord, by repenting, can I rediscover His gracious ways.

Today, Lord, let me continually keep You before me. I will call on Your Holy Spirit to so influence and guide me that I can rest in the gladness, the glory, and security that You provide. I give thanks to You and only You. Amen.
