November 10

Not that I have already obtained it, or have already become perfect, but I press on in order that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.  Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do; forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 3:12-14.

Paul is expressing his mindset toward the concept of pressing on.  We, as well, are to be anxious for growing in all aspects of Christ.  Today is not to be the same as yesterday when it comes to facing the trials, situations, and difficulties that face us.  More and more we are to be like Christ.

It is interesting that Paul says we have been laid hold of by Christ.  Yes, He has in effect grabbed us to shape and change us into His image.  It is a process that goes on daily in our lives, and we would do well to accept this process, participate in it, and do everything on our part to praise Jesus for it.  There is nothing more destructive than the improper attitude that some of us have—namely that we are just simply saved without any need to grow in sanctification.  When we love Jesus as our Messiah we will truly want to be more like Him in every way.  That process will include giving up certain bad habits as well as taking on new, productive ones—like daily devotions and prayer.

Heavenly Father, it is awesome to realize, as best we can, that You have sacrificed everything for us, just so we could become more like You.  Your Son has not only modeled this for us, but through Your Holy Spirit we are being pressed on daily to conform to upward call of Christ Jesus.  Your yoke is easy as we walk together in harmony and joint participation in this work.  Thank You and Amen.
