But we do see Him who has been made for a little while
lower than the angels, namely, Jesus, because of the suffering of death crowned
with glory and honor, that by the grace of God He might taste death for
everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and through whom
are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their
salvation through sufferings. For both He who sanctifies and those who are
sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call
them brethren. Hebrews 2:9-11.
Yes, we have been shown the Son of God. And He, by His
suffering and identification with our life here on earth, is willing to call us
brethren, or brothers/sisters. We are one with Him in all respects. All of
this is due to the grace of God. There is nothing more for us to know or
experience, for to be in Christ and for Him to be in us is the sum total of all
existence. We shall carry this with Him into glory.
We wonder why Jesus had to suffer. How could He, who is
perfect, be perfected by suffering? In the Greek we can substitute the word
‘complete’. In other words Jesus has gained the complete experience of man’s
plight before God—at the cross He has experienced the horrible weight of our
sin. As He walked the earth He totally identified with our struggle over the
trials of life. He had no place to lay His head; He had no home to call His
own. Yet He never failed to perform the role of the perfect servant--and all
without committing a sin. We would do well to want to be the same way—just like
Jesus.
This passage calls attention to our sanctification—or our
being ‘set apart’. Jesus is the one who sanctifies. We are set apart into
Him. We are truly one. The great promise and reality of life is that we can
truly call Him a brother. This is family experienced in the highest form.
Heavenly Father, thank You for coming down to experience
our life in this world. You loved us enough to send Your Son and allow Him to
die at the cross--just so we could be brothers and sisters in Your great
family. I will never stop praising You for this. Let me experience this
intimate relationship each moment of today. Amen.
