Mar. 25
This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to
visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the
world. James 1: 27.
Perhaps we have a tendency to think we are doing a favor to widows when we call
on them. Our fleshly nature may think that God is now indebted to us for doing
this. But this attitude is all wrong. While my wife and I were helping a widow
friend move to her new home, this widow, in her wisdom of 94 years, proclaimed
“Hey, I just realized that I am a widow that needs to be called upon. It is my
turn to receive help from my Christian friends. And I can be content in that”.
So we see the real purpose in the working of Christ’s body , which He calls the
church. It is that we become more whole, more a harmonious unit, when we work
together to fulfill our needs. The cycle is complete–for everyone who receives
there is one who gives. And the world will see the body at work–for we know they
are watching. It is not just that the widow is blessed, but that we are blessed
by the opportunity to give, and we become more aware of Christ within.
Thank you, Jesus, for this lesson of life. We discover more of You when we
release ourselves to Your service. Without Your leading the way, our steps would
be uncertain and futile. Amen.
