Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you
shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this
child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one
such child in My name receives Me. Matthew 18:3-5.
I will always remember a recent Saturday evening as we were setting up chairs
for the Sunday service. A little, five-year-old girl, with big, bright eyes,
looked up at me with a wonderful smile. She wanted to show me her tiny purse,
which was full of things that gave her much joy. There was a hairbrush, a pen, a
broken miniature radio, and whatever. But the purity of her spirit, the trust,
the expectancy of total acceptance from a stranger, brought tears to my eyes.
Here was the faith of a little child who was captivated by the moment—who was
eager to share an element of her life with an old man. Her parents were helping
us nearby, and they also beamed with approval over her friendly gesture. Was
this not the spirit that Jesus seeks from each of us?
Lord Jesus, remove from my shoulders the burdens I carry. Make me as a little
child who looks intently into Your eyes. Help me see the simple things in life
as a blessing. Let me not be consumed by the memories of the past—let me only be
captivated by the moment. Give me a simple trust in You as we walk together and
share life’s opportunities. I will not fear for the future, for You are with me.
Thank you for receiving me as a little child. Amen.
