Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of
God; and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. By this we know
that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His
commandments. 1 John 5:1,2.
It would be easy to quickly read over this passage and fail
to examine ourselves. John is clearly explaining that we can know, beyond any
doubt, that we are saved and have become a new creation in Christ, the Messiah.
When we encounter those who choose not to believe, can we be certain of our
faith and can we explain with certainty that we know that we are saved? Yes, we
are to KNOW!
What is the evidence that assures us that we know? We have
the testimony of those that went before us, both their writings in the
Scripture, as well as the shared experiences of those with whom we walked,
however momentarily, on this earth. We have the testimony of how God has been
faithful, in spite of the unfaithfulness of man. John, in this epistle, has
proclaimed that we have seen, touched and heard the Son of God as he walked
among us. We know by faith in the very word of God. We know by our own
experience, and we can proclaim the fact of our salvation as we believed upon
Jesus.
Yes, we need to defend the Gospel of our salvation. We can
tell of our own changes that took place as we believed. And no one can take
this away from us. We can explain that the commandments are fulfilled as we
love God and our fellow man. The commandments become a ‘want to’ rather than a
‘have to’. All because we have been changed into His likeness. Yes, my friend,
we can KNOW.
Father, help me
reach out to those who don’t know, or who choose deliberately to deny the
reality of Your being. They may not see me as perfect, for I will reserve that
image to apply solely to You, but I want to be a witness of Your love. I will
trust You to reveal only what is necessary and sufficient as I encounter my
fellow man.
