May 13

When pride comes, then comes dishonor, but with the humble is wisdom. Proverbs 11:2.

The word of God is very clear about pride—it is that sin that leads to our fall. Elevating self, causing attention to our own accomplishments, substituting our will for His—all these efforts only lead to self-inflicted wounds. They also grieve our Lord. On a strange twist of this, I have actually met those who are proud of their humility. We are so fallen when we act as though He has no thought for the way we are to conduct our life.

As I comprehend God’s ways, I am reminded of the many times I have been humbled by my failures. They are hard to take at first, but afterwards the proper perspective begins to appear. I have acted as if I were the leader. I have rushed ahead of Jesus, when He wants only for me to walk closely beside Him. There is always a lesson to be learned in these foolish endeavors. “Wait on Me,” He is saying.

Today Father, let me walk in the wisdom that comes from true humility. I will seek Your ways—I will not rush ahead. My goal is always to give honor to You alone. I will not seek the praise of man. I will not attempt to have a righteousness of my own. (Philippians 3:9,10). I fully expect to be conformed to the suffering and death of Jesus, so that I might experience His resurrected life forever. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
