March 26

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Romans 5:6-10.

I am not sure we will ever realize how much God loves us. In this passage we find that we are helpless to find God on our own merits. Helpless indeed, for in our struggling lives, before being found by Christ, we were even clueless about the very One who has made us. We might even think that Christ had died for us because we are basically good, but there is no room for even that. He loved us while were totally incompetent, while we were indifferent to Him, while we were scheming against Him, yes, even while we were enemies.

To be reconciled is to be brought back into a favorable relationship. God was so bent upon that endeavor that He even allowed the sacrifice of His own Son. That Son, Jesus, gave up His life willingly out of love. Will we ever comprehend this? Perhaps in eternity future, as we gaze in wonderment at Him, we will understand in some portion the awesome love of Jesus. Oh, to be like that on this earth! I seem to fall far short, even with His Holy Spirit within me. But I am saved by His life.

Heavenly Father, as I contemplate this coming day, I wonder if I can even show a small portion of Your love to others. I will not demand anything from them—how could I when You did not demand anything from me. Give me the insight to know when to wait on You, when to listen for Your advice, and when to speak in love for You. Thank You that I can be Your hands, Your feet, and Your voice upon this earth. Amen.
