March 11

Like apples of gold in settings of silver is a word spoken in right circumstances. Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear. Like the cold of snow in the time of harvest is a faithful messenger to those who send him, for he refreshes the soul of his masters. Proverbs 25:11-13.

Our mouths can offer praise and wisdom and then, without warning, speak condemnation and all sorts of vile things. Here, in this passage, we are told of the ‘silver’ that may come from us when we speak the right thing in the right circumstances. We may be offering encouragement; we may be speaking truth that is needed to correct a fellow believer. At just the right time we may show up to offer a ‘cold drink’ to one who has tired from heavy labor. The Lord knows the needs of all those around us, and He will direct our paths to the right person at the right time.

Yes, the tongue has power over our lives. As announced in the book of James, it is like the rudder of a ship. I have learned the agony of a loose tongue, and I have been uplifted by a friendly voice that comes in a time of need. Words of love go a long way toward making this an abundant life here on earth.

I ask You, Lord, to guide me in all that I say and do today. Let me have Your discernment concerning what I am to speak. I want the words to be from You.
I will need to listen more carefully to You before I speak. I will need to see You in every circumstance, and even see You personally in the people I meet. You can handle of this in a loving way. Thank You. Amen.
