Mar. 31
And around the throne were twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw
twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white garments, and golden crowns on
their heads. Revelation 4: 4.
It is fascinating to imagine the significance of the number 24. Maybe it is
just the mathematician in me that wants to know, but why 24? God does nothing by
chance, and He has a way of using events from our past to confirm the validity
of the future. A careful count of the names given for Christ in the first
chapter of Revelation will reveal the number 24. In a similar fashion we can
observe in 1 Chronicles 24 (coincidence?) that the sons of Aaron drew lots for
their offices in the ministry, and there were 24 selected. So I see nothing that
implies all this is symbolic. On the contrary this is a picture of a literal
throne with 24 literal elders. This will happen!
I like the thought that the elders will cast their crowns before the throne.
(Revelation 4: 10). We like to imagine how we will look with a crown that is
awarded for our works in Christ, but it seems far more appropriate for us to
cast our crowns on the throne–only He is worthy to receive them.
Father in Heaven, praise be to your Son, by whom we obtain an inheritance too
great for us to imagine. Thank You that we can share in Your life. Instill in us
today the glorious picture of how You are at work in this world through the Holy
Spirit. Make us receptive to His guidance. amen.
