Mar. 28
“–speaking to one another in psalms and hymns
and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.
Ephesians 5: 19.
In an unusual way this verse came to me as we walked the beach at sunset. There
was a large group of people watching the sun. This is a traditional expression
that perhaps shows awe over God’s creation, but at times it borders on sun
worship. Almost unnoticed, in a small shelter next to the beach, was a husband
and wife singing to the Lord. I can’t express it any other way. They had a
keyboard and guitar, and their voices harmonized beautifully in songs that
praised Jesus. I had never heard any of the songs before, and it was somewhat
sad that only a handful of people were listening. Several thoughts came to
mind-- “narrow is the way”--“where 2 or 3 are gathered”.
I asked the singers, “What church do you represent?” Should I have been
surprised to hear the response? “We believe the church is within our hearts. We
are here only to praise Jesus”. Someone in the audience requested a specific
song, and they replied, “We only sing songs that we, ourselves, have written”.
How else should it be? I could see that there was extreme talent here, but it
was all dedicated to the Lord. Oh, that we all could do this. After sunset we
left as the group was finishing, and I could only think that I had seen more of
Jesus. Their cup was running over with songs that were so wonderful, yet unknown
to the world. Are there ways we too can express Him? Certainly yes, and we need
only to seek His guidance in offering our spiritual gifts. Perhaps only a few
will see or hear, but that is not our concern.
Thank you Lord for the gifts you bestow.
Amen.
