Mar. 22
But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from
God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption. 1 Corinthians 1: 30.
There is nothing more amazing than the meaning of this verse. How often have we
heard the words of man that urge us to strive for the characteristics of Christ
by the works of our flesh? It all sounds as a noble goal–yet it is actually
counter to God’s purposes. For we gradually learn that all has been accomplished
by Christ. Wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption are not
separate entities for which we strive–instead, we already have them by faith in
Christ. He, Himself, is all of this in one life which He shares with us. Nor
does He ration out any of these in measured response to our searching. No, He
just shows us more of Himself.
It has taken me a long time to realize this. My early years in the Christian
life were full of fleshly attempts to convince others of doctrine, of scripture,
and of proper living that are only segments of the Christ life. With the passing
of years it is now slowly dawning on me that I have the life of Christ in me, so
all my striving is really just a matter of directing my faith toward Christ, it
is not one of law-keeping or intellect or applied skill. He is faithful to
respond through the Holy Spirit to accomplish His work in me.
Often I seem to be at the “end of my rope”; that is, I find that I really don’t
know how to approach a task that needs to be done. Praise God, that is more
often than not the right place to be. When I am weak He can be strong in me. The
outcome will be that His wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption
will show to the world–in spite of my best fleshly efforts. Just let it be so,
Lord, as you patiently work through my weakness. Amen.
