It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full
acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I
am foremost of all. And yet for this reason I found mercy, in order that in me
as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience, as an
example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. 1 Timothy
1:15,16.
Paul makes this remarkable statement—he above all other men
is the greatest sinner. Only the conviction of the Holy Spirit could bring him
to this realization. So we must conclude that Paul is correct—he is indeed the
greatest sinner!
Paul is the writer of much of the New Testament. His words
and his actions closely represent the life of Jesus. He modeled the life of
Jesus in all that did. How is it that God can use the greatest sinner? We must
be careful here, for we have forgotten the One who has borne the greatest
sin—Jesus. Yes we would be more correct in saying that Paul represents the
greatest forgiven sinner.
We often face people who seem determined to believe that
God could not possibly forgive their sin. It is as if they are saying that God
could handle everyone else but them. It is a form of self-worship to think this
way. Or even perhaps it is an attempt to obtain pity for self.
We are set free to proclaim that all of mankind’s sin has
been paid for at the cross. We need not have any reservations about this. The
act of Christ was complete—He said on the cross, “It is finished!” And so it
is.
Heavenly Father, we thank You over and over for Your
forgiveness. We are new creatures set upon this earth to shout this message to
all whom would believe. Let us do this with a passion that comes from You.
Thank You for taking all of our sin upon Yourself. Amen.
