The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?  Psalms 27:1

We are vessels, or lamps, that carry light unto the world.  But the light itself is the Lord.  We cannot generate the light; we can only let it shine.  We also think of our salvation as something that has happened to us, but that is only part of the story.  Our salvation is the Lord Himself.  We are captured by a person, the Lord of the universe.  Our salvation is expressed within Him.

Charles Spurgeon says of this verse, “Salvation finds us in the dark, but it does not leave us there; it gives light to those who sit in the valley of the shadow of death.  After conversion our God is our joy, comfort, guide, teacher, and in every sense our light.”

All fear is to be cast out.  There actually is no one remaining to fear, for we are in the Lord.  And of course there is no one to dread.  All victory is ours because Jesus has already won it at the cross.

Today’s world tries to give cause for fear and dread.  There are wars and rumors of wars—both physical and spiritual.  We are faced with ever-tightening financial concerns, and our very lifestyles are being challenged.  Yet the promise of eternal life awaits us, and in a very real sense it has already started.

Father, we owe everything to You.  Let us be ever mindful of this.  We deeply want Your light to shine, so remove any obstacle in our life that would dim the brilliance of that light.  We thank You in the name of Jesus.  Amen.
