And He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him, and that He might send
them out to preach, and to have authority to cast out the demons. Mark 3:14,15.
Our modern culture fails to comprehend the meaning of Jesus choosing the twelve.
A Rabbi of those times would have a following of those who had been prepared
over a lengthy time of study and prayer. He would pick the best of the class. In
contrast, we see Jesus approach these men, some being fishermen, who had not
been schooled by the priests. Jesus is proclaiming that He will prepare the
unprepared! And that is what He does with us when we are called. We need to rid
ourselves of the idea that it is only the pastors and seminary graduates who are
allowed to proclaim the Word. The term ‘laity’ does not apply when we are under
the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
There are times that I feel woefully inadequate to proclaim the Word. Yet, in my
weakness, that is the perfect time for Him to show me His ways and His words.
Help me Lord to always realize this. It only takes a moment for You to rescue me
out of my dilemma, for You know exactly when and where to step in and show Your
will.
Thank You Father for choosing the twelve common men who would eventually help
transform the world. It is a marvelous example of how You can use us as well.
Let me sense Your presence moment by moment today, and I await Your revelation
of strength and grace at the proper time. Thank You and Amen.
