July 4
And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the
Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our
adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. Romans 8:23.
It was a pattern of worship among the Israelites to give first fruits to the
Lord. A crop might have just begun to appear, but the first fruits would be
given with the expected promise of continued harvest in the future. It was a way
to honor the goodness and bounty of God. The choicest portions were brought to
the priest and placed before the altar. They might consist of barley, wheat,
olives, dates, figs and grapes.
God has given us a first fruit—the Holy Spirit. He is given to us as a promise
of even greater revelation in the future. Today we see dimly in a mirror, but
there is so much more to be revealed about our redemption.
Can I do less for my Lord? Certainly He would have us offer ourselves, our
talents, and the fruit of the Spirit back to Him in service and worship. We may
think our offering is meager, but it is the faith behind the offering that is so
important. Let the Lord do the multiplying.
Thank You, Lord Jesus, for the gift of first fruit of the Spirit. You have
provided a new life and desire to follow You. I can only see how it has begun,
yet I know that the future holds promises that are far beyond my imagination.
Thanks for this day, and I offer it as a first fruit to You. Amen.
