July 25

I wait for the Lord, my soul does wait, and in His word do I hope. Psalm 130:5

This verse had a key role in the conversion of John Wesley. He had heard it spoken one day in the morning as well as in the afternoon. He then was ‘strangely warmed’ by a reading from the writings of Martin Luther. Yes, it is this hunger that the Lord is trying to create within us—the hunger for the word of God. It provides our only hope for salvation. Not by works, as John Wesley had tried for so long, but by trusting in Jesus, who is the Word.

How often have I also trusted in my own works? I imagine that I am progressing in a satisfactory manner by using my reasoning power to get through various difficulties, when all the while I need only to trust in the Lord. There is a process of waiting that the Lord would have me learn. I am too prone to leap ahead with quick solutions, only to find later that my solution only led to more difficulties.

Lord, today I place my hope in You. Your word is my lamp that will guide my feet. Take my mind and tune it to the thoughts of Jesus. He alone is the fulfillment of all hope.
May all around me see that I have changed in a way that will give all praise to You. And I thank You in the name of Jesus. Amen.
