July 20

And He was saying, “The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil; and goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts up and grows—how, he himself does not know. The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head. But when the crop permits, he immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” Mark 4:26-29.

God has chosen to work His desires among faithful followers who by themselves do not have full knowledge of how God works. We plant the Word of God among our fellow men when we speak of our love relationship to Jesus. Often, to our surprise, the seed takes root. God has been at work watering the soil and nourishing the seed. We can not hurry the process or take any credit for our part in the sowing. All of our efforts are in response to the love of God that provides the seed and the proper soil in which to plant the seed. The Holy Spirit does this even while we sleep.

As I think back over my life here on earth, I can recall times when seeds were planted. But I must admit that those moments came upon me without warning—there was no opportunity for me to prepare the soil, or even to think of what to say. God was at work preparing everything, and I just had that moment when I listened to what He told me to say or do. Oh, I need to listen more! Also, I am certain that there were other times when seed was planted but I had no idea the event ever happened. God has chosen to produce fruit through workers who are available—even if they are not fully appraised of what is happening.

Father, all praise goes to You as the tiller of the soil. Your Word is the precious seed, and it is abundant and life giving. Let me not be so worldly minded that I forget to be about the planting of seed. I do not know the proper time to sow or the condition of the soil—I just want to be available. Guide me this day into the wonders of Your harvest.
In Jesus name, Amen.
