July 19
This is a trustworthy statement, and concerning these things, I want you to
speak confidently, so that those who have believed God may be careful to engage
in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men. Titus 3:8.
We will never speak confidently without the assurance that Christ is with us. My
statements, if they spring from perspectives that just conform to the world, may
appear confident, but they will not withstand the test of time. There is
something about confidence that is generated in the Lord. He continually assures
us that words spoken with His truth will transform lives and generate grace and
love for those who hear. He speaks to us with His still, small voice. We need to
listen for it.
I often think that I really don’t know what is good. Jesus has said that only
the Father is good. If I should imagine that I have good things to say, I
quickly need to ask Him to remove any selfish motives or opportunity for
self-enhancement. Good words can be spoiled by improper attention applied to the
speaker. And it is the same for works—only His works will survive the test.
Today I ask You, Father, to show me good and profitable ways to reach my fellow
man. I will stumble if You are not with me. My judgments about good or evil
will be clouded unless I turn to You for guidance and wisdom. Thank You for Your
steadfastness and love that reaches out to me. Together we will engage in deeds
that honor You. Amen.
