All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but
the Lord weighs the motives. Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will
be established. Proverbs 16:2,3.
When we venture to do anything, it is usually because we
think it is the right thing to do. But we are not always careful to examine our
real motives. We appear ‘clean’. But all the while the Lord is watching and
realizing our true intentions. Is our desire to please self, or to please the
Lord?
We need to seek the Lord in all that we do. This can only
be done as we absorb His word and learn His ways. Our desire should be to show
His character and understanding to each person we meet. We need only look at
how Jesus touched the lives of people—He always sought to give them what was
best for them. There were never any hidden motives.
The promise of this verse is so encouraging. We need only
to commit, or in the original language, rollover our plans to the Lord.
This would of course be done with prayer and anticipation of His full knowledge
of our motives. Then we can know that our plans will be honored and fulfilled.
What a magnificent promise!
Father in Heaven, we seek Your understanding and wisdom in
regard to our motives. We want only to be open to Your desires and plans. Be
quick to reveal any hidden plans that would attempt to achieve praise for
ourselves. All praise must be given to You alone. Thank You for Your steady
hand upon us. Amen.
