January 27
“And it shall come about when the soles of the feet of
the priests who carry the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest
in the waters of the Jordan, the water of the Jordan shall be cut off, and the
waters which are flowing down from above shall stand in one heap.” Joshua 3:13
The instructions from the Lord are specific and clear. The
Ark of the Covenant is to go forth into the Jordan, and, at the moment the feet
of the priests carrying the ark touch the water, the water shall stop flowing
and stand up. Only Joshua and Caleb had seen the parting of the Red Sea, as all
of the other Israelites in the original group had died in the wilderness. So
this was something new—it required faith to venture into the Jordan. At this
time of year it was likely at flood stage.
The Lord requires us to take the step of faith, not leading
the way but allowing God to lead the way. The ark, representing the presence of
Christ, was to go first. It was made of acacia wood, a type that grows in
parched, dry ground. Jesus is described in Isaiah 53:2 as a root from dry
ground.
God is eager to respond to our faith. In every venture we
undertake He is providing His leadership and waiting to see if we believe in
Him—believing enough to take the risk of faith. There may be a person to whom
we are to witness; there may be a neighbor who needs our care and assistance,
but in all cases we are to proceed in faith. God can’t wait to bless us as we
do this
Father, thank You for Your faithfulness. I want to learn
from You and trust You in all that I do. I will not try to analyze Your methods
or look for ways to improve Your performance. Thank You for allowing us to just
respond in faith, for if it were to depend upon our skills we would never
succeed. Amen.
