For you have not come to a mountain that may be touched and to a blazing fire, and to darkness and gloom and whirlwind. But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels. Hebrews 12:18,24. After explaining that God disciplines those whom He loves, we arrive at this message, which compares Mt. Sinai, where the Law was handed down, and Mount Zion, where God dwells. It is a remarkable message about the gospel that shows a comparison of Law and grace. The Law was handed down to one mediator, Moses. Grace comes through the second mediator, Jesus. The Law came amid fear and anxiety. None of the people could even touch the mountain. But Zion presents a dwelling place that is open to all who would believe. The Law required the sacrifice of animals while grace gave us the sacrifice of Jesus, the perfect Lamb. Only Moses could draw near to God, but now all can draw near. My friends, we have such a Savior in Jesus. We are so thankful that the way of grace has been prepared for us. How can we ever choose the way of the Law, which leads to death? Yes, we have chosen life in Christ. Only those who refuse or misconstrue the discipline of the Lord would ever become bitter in their walk with the Lord. His discipline shapes us to reveal the very nature of God and how it is freely given to us. We find ourselves wanting to be more like Him in every way. Thank You heavenly Father for preparing the way. We have left behind the fear and anxiety of Mt. Sinai, and we have found a new dwelling in Zion. It is an eternal city where we will learn of You forever. We are in awe of You and all that You have created and shared with us. Amen. |
