He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Psalm 91:1.
The author of this Psalm is not generally known, but many
believe it to be written by Moses. The hardships he goes on to describe can be
ascribed to the forty years in the wilderness, as Moses witnessed the evil of
the complaining Israelites, and, in contrast, the mercy and work of the Lord.
The secret place does not seem to be a priority for every
Christian. We are dealing here with a description of God’s temple. Yes, we
have access to the Holy of Holies, because the veil was torn away at the
crucifixion of Christ. But many of us are content to remain in the Holy
Place,
where the candles of the Lord shine upon us and the showbread is available for
our nourishment. It would appear to most of us that this is sufficient—we are
partaking of what Christ has purchased for us. We know that we have left the
outer court behind, but we must not be satisfied with just this inner
sanctuary.
There are a few, and I long to be one of them, who seek the
Holy of Holies. This is where intimate fellowship can take place with God.
This is the place of rest in Christ. Here, and here alone, is a revelation of
all that God is about—where we can discover God’s will for each moment of our
lives. I long for that intimacy. I must allow Him to so transform me that
all other distractions of the world are crowded out.
Dear Father, let me dwell in Your secret place. I know I
can approach You on the ground of Christ’s shed blood. You see me in Him.
Strip away all that would distract me, and I will carry You to the world around
me. Thank You and Amen.
