January 19
But a certain Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw
him, he felt compassion, and came to him, and bandaged up his wounds, pouring
oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an
inn, and took care of him. Luke 10:33,34.
We all know the story of the Good Samaritan—or do we? There is a prophetic way
to read this scripture that reveals who is the one who had compassion on the
traveling man.
The priest and the Levite could not save the man, but this Samaritan could. Yes,
by now you have guessed it—that man, represented as the Samaritan, was Jesus.
Only Jesus could save the traveler; the Law of the priests and Levites could
not. He anointed him with oil, representing the Holy Spirit, and with wine,
representing the shed blood of the Savior that was to come. As the story
continues we even see that He paid the price for the man’s care and welfare. He
also returned for him.
Oh, how often do I fail to Jesus in all that we read in His precious word? The
scriptures cry out to us that all of God’s word is fulfilled in the life of
Jesus. There is no one else to whom we can turn.
As I walk with You today, Lord, let me see those that are to be objects of my
compassion. They may be those whom the world has rejected, or even despised. Let
me see them as You would see them--worthy of love, my possessions, and my time
spent in acts that will care for them. I know this is possible because of Your
presence, moment by moment. You have chosen to share Your life with me, and I
thank You. Amen.
