January 17

But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.  Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord to be salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you.  2 Peter 3:13-15.

Just as we know that the heavens and the earth were created by God, so it is that we look forward to the new heavens and earth.  We shall dwell there for eternity in the righteousness of Christ.  Oh how I long for this to be revealed.

We are to be diligent in peace.  We know that Christ is our peace, for He established the Law and made it possible by faith for man to reach God.  The war between man and God, characterized by sin, is now over.  And He loved us even while we were sinners.

If we are seen as blameless and spotless, it is because of the shed blood of Jesus, which washes us clean.

Peter has shared some remarkable thoughts, and we sometimes marvel at how God can transform such a fisherman into a fisher of men.  But so it is with us, for we are transformed as well.  It would be well if we claimed all of this by faith and set about on the task of being diligent in that faith.

Father we thank You with all our mind, soul, and heart.  You have done what we could never do, and it is because of this grace that we can be here today, tomorrow, and forever with You.  We adore You and Your Son, Jesus.  In His name we pray.  Amen.
