January 14
And Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My
father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and
the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “God
will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two
of them walked on together. Genesis 22:7,8.
This is a well-known story, partly because it is so
amazing. Abraham had been asked by God to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. This
is a shadow of Christ, who was the Father’s only Son. What must have been going
through the mind of Isaac, who seemed not to have a clue as to the intentions of
God and Abraham? Isaac walked with his father for three days to reach this
place of sacrifice. What wonderful things did they discuss on the way?
Abraham was assured in his own mind that God would provide
the substitute sacrifice. Just as we have a substitute, Jesus, who died for us
at the cross. What marvelous faith, what bold confidence he is showing. We are
to be the same way, my friend. God will never ask us to do anything unless the
means to do it are provided. We are to look to Him for all of our needs.
I wonder if we can show this kind of faith. We live in
perplexing times, all the while being bombarded by trials and situations that
demand our attention as well as our resources. We seem to be too stretched to
respond to all of the needs around us. But in the midst of all of this we are
to turn to God for the calm, clear direction for our lives. Yes, He will
provide—no matter the cost.
Father, we ask for the faith of Abraham to deal with our
daily walk in this world. We ultimately want to trust only in You, for to do
otherwise is futile. Work Your way of life into us, giving us the steady
knowledge that You will provide. We thank You in the name of Jesus. Amen.
