January 12

Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”  John 4:13,14.

The woman at the well was told of the water that Jesus gives.  Our world presents a parched, dry view of life.  There is nothing offered beyond what we see with our senses, and eternal life is not attainable by worldly methods.  Not so with Jesus, who offers Himself as the water springing up to eternal life.

I wonder why we continually search for life in the wrong places.  We have strange idols today.  Our TV, possessions, vacations to exotic places all call for our attention.  Only Jesus can offer us a perspective that puts fleshly things in their proper place.  They are not to be a resource for living—they are meant to lead to opportunities to share the Good News of Jesus with all those we meet.  We are in the world but not of it.

There is something about the water that Jesus gives that goes beyond human understanding.  It not only nourishes us spiritually, but it changes us dramatically.  No one can hold the water that Jesus gives without becoming more like Him.  That change springs up to eternal life, so the change gives us a glimpse of what we will be like in Heaven.  We shall be like Jesus.

Thank You Father for the eternal water that is in Your Son.  We cannot hoard it—it is there to share with all we meet.  We marvel at the strength and purity of this spring.  We cannot exhaust this water.  Thank You for making it so.  Amen.
