Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the
Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance
from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about washings, and
laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
Hebrews 6:1,2.
The author is talking to Hebrew Christians who mistakenly
thought that they must place themselves under Jewish law in order to complete
their walk with Jesus. It was a crippling idea that caused them to dwell on the
elementary, the beginning steps, of Christianity. They were always uncertain of
their acceptance before God. They were unsure that God was really walking with
them in their adventures into the world. As a result they were very immature in
their faith.
I know many Christians who show this behavior, and I
suppose I have shown that same characteristic from time to time. But God is
asking us to press on to a higher calling. The author goes on to explain that
when we taste the power of the Holy Spirit we will show faith and patience
toward all the promises of God. God is not going to forget us or abandon us.
He will lead us into all of His works and we will become eager participants in
all that He has in store for us.
We are to break out of our old habits. We are to eagerly
await new, exciting adventures with the Holy Spirit. We always know the end
result—making us into the image of Christ—but the way to that goal will be new,
challenging, and even surprising. There can be no room for dwelling upon our
old dead works.
Than You Father for the awesome path You have outlined for
us. We press on toward new adventures with You. Amen.
