Was not Abraham our Father justified by works, when he
offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was working with his
works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected. James 2:21,22.
We often wonder whether to proceed with some works, all the
while being concerned if our works are in line with God’s wishes. Perhaps even
worse is the opposite inclination—to jump ahead in works with the mindset that I
do not need God’s will in the matter at all. Yes, we are sometimes too complex;
or I should say that we are bent to self-criticism and self-analysis.
James is clearly saying that faith and works are to be
linked. Faith must work with our works. We cannot afford to ponder our
next move for an indefinite time. If our faith is centered upon Jesus we will
find ourselves moving ahead into works with our whole intent, by faith, to give
all the credit and praise to Him. He, in turn, is working in the midst of our
work, all the while affirming our step of faith. Our faith is being perfected
in the midst of the works. The author of our perfection is working at our side.
Our works are to be in harmony with God’s word. He would
not have me do anything against His word. Does my work, dedicated to Him,
satisfy the fruit of the Spirit? Does it produce love, joy, and patience---?
Only by dwelling in His word can I be aware of the harmony between my intentions
and His will.
Thank You Father for the merging of our works with Your
works. We work together in faith. I can only grow more like You as I take a
step of faith into works. Thank You and Amen.
