Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil. 2 Kings 4:2b.
Do we often think that we have nothing to offer to God? We seem to place bounds
on what God can use. Our own view of things takes control and we are dominated
by doubt. But it is not intended to be that way. In this story Elisha took the
oil and produced, through the power of God, many vessels full. It is not unlike
the feeding of the 4000 or the 5000 in the days of Jesus. This is not
“prosperity theology.” The Lord is searching for our priorities. He is to be
first. Why do we try to find so many other substitutes?
What is different about Elisha? Here we see a man totally dedicated to our Lord.
He exists only to serve God. He has no other priorities. Self does not matter.
In Elisha we see what the new creature in Jesus can do. (2 Corinthians 5:17). We
have been given that new creature, so the same power is available to us as well.
We are not to seek this power as an end in itself, for that would likely corrupt
our ego and produce self-pride if we were not sufficiently mature. But we are to
seek the desires of the Holy Spirit as He enters our life and speaks to us. The
new creature desperately wants to do this.
Today, Lord, I want to offer you my life. Take it and fashion it so that Your
purposes are fulfilled. I am a new creature in Christ. Thank you for sharing
Your life with me. Amen.
